How PDR works

The technician gets behind the panel, usually by removing trim, a light or an inner cover, and uses long steel rods to massage the metal back out in many small, controlled pushes. A reflective light board shows the shape of the dent so it can be worked until the surface is level. For dents that can't be reached from behind, a glue-pull method lifts the dent from the outside.

When PDR is the right fix

• Door dings and car park dents.
• Shallow, rounded dents on doors, guards, bonnets, roofs and boot lids.
• Hail damage, where there can be dozens of small dents across the roof and bonnet.
• Minor creases, depending on how sharp they are.

When it isn't

• The paint is cracked, chipped or flaking at the dent. PDR can't repair the paint, so the area needs refinishing anyway.
• The metal is sharply creased or stretched, or the dent is right on a panel edge.
• There's no way to reach or grip the dent.
• Some aluminium and high-strength steel panels are harder to work and may limit what can be done.

Hail damage

Hail damage is usually covered under comprehensive car insurance, so start by lodging a claim with your insurer (see the insurance claims guide). Photograph the damage in daylight from a low angle, where the dents show up best, and send the photos through with your quote request.
