What a collision repair involves

Every accident job starts with an assessment. We look at the outside damage, then check behind it: brackets, reinforcement bars, mounts, sensors and the panels next to the impact. A bumper that looks scuffed can hide a broken absorber or a bent reinforcement bar, and a hit to a wheel can move suspension or steering parts.

From there the repair usually runs in this order:

1. Strip and inspect. Damaged trim, lights and panels come off so the full extent of the damage is visible.
2. Structure. If the body or chassis has moved, it is measured and pulled back into position before any cosmetic work starts. Get this wrong and panels never line up, doors don't close cleanly and tyres can wear unevenly.
3. Panels. Each damaged panel is either repaired or replaced, depending on how badly it is damaged and whether a repair will be sound. See panel beating.
4. Preparation and paint. Repaired areas are filled where needed, primed, sanded and painted in the spray booth, with the colour matched and blended. See spray painting.
5. Reassembly and checks. Everything goes back on, gaps and alignment are checked, and lights, sensors and electrics are tested.

Insurance or private

We repair collision damage for both. If you're claiming, lodge the claim with your insurer first; they will usually want to assess the damage or our quote before authorising the repair. What affects the cost

• Whether the damage has reached the structure, or stops at the outer panels.
• How many panels need repair versus replacement, and the price and availability of parts for your model.
• Paint: metallic, pearl and multi-coat colours take more work to match than solid colours, and blending into neighbouring panels adds area.
• Modern safety systems. Cameras, radar and parking sensors mounted in bumpers and windscreens may need checking after a repair.
